Your Appointment is Coming Up!
Let Us Help You Prepare.

First, we’d like to thank you for choosing Outpatient Diagnostic Center of Alabama as your imaging center. It is our privileged to care for you.

As you prepare for your upcoming appointment, please access the below resources to help answer any questions you may have. We are also happy to connect if you would like to discuss anything with one of your care team members.

What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging test that uses a strong magnetic field, gradients, and radio waves to create images of the body’s internal organs and structures. It does not use radiation or X-Rays to produce the image. The resulting images reveal details that are invisible or hard to see when using other methods, such as X-ray, Ultrasound, or CT. Providers often rely on MRI images for an accurate diagnosis of a variety of injuries, conditions and diseases.

Are you claustrophobic?

Patients with claustrophobia complete MRI exams successfully every day. Our compassionate technologists can help alleviate your nervousness and make you feel comfortable and at ease. Here are a few things we do to help you successfully complete your MRI:

  • Comfortable positioning – the technologist will position you on the table to ensure accurate image capture, but will provide pillows and blankets for comfort before beginning the exam.
  • Noise reduction – MRI machines make rhythmic thumping and whirring noises so ear protection is provided. Music is available at all sites, for a soothing distraction. The ear protection and music can be used together so the remaining audible noises will be muffled.
  • Constant communication – Each MRI is equipped with a two-way communication system. The technologist can speak with you and you can speak to them so you will be kept informed on how long each series will take. If needed, you can be removed between series.
  • Emergency call button – Before the exam, you will be handed a call button that you can squeeze to alert the technologist of distress. If squeezed, the technologist will pause the exam, come into the room and resolve your concerns so the exam can be completed.
  • Direct contact with staff or family – If needed, a family member can be fully screened for safety and can accompany you into the exam room. The relative or staff member can sit nearby or hold your hand for reassurance.
  • Medication – If anxiety or claustrophobia is extreme, a sedative may be taken. The medication MUST be prescribed by your provider in advance of the study. ODC Alabama does not prescribe or have medication on-site.
    • Bring the medication with you and tell the registrar you have it. You will be instructed when to take it.
    • You must bring a driver with you to the exam as you may not drive after taking a sedative.
  • Results – Your results will be sent directly to your referring provider. After they’ve reviewed the report, they’ll reach out to you to discuss the findings and discuss next steps.

Do you need an injection?

Not all exams require a contrast injection. If your provider has referred you for a contrasted MRI, do not fear. The technologist will review the use of the contrast agent with you prior to the exam and answer any questions you may have. During the injection, you may feel a cool sensation at the injection site, which is completely normal. This injection allows for better visualization of organs and blood vessels and ensures you get the best images for evaluation by the radiologist.

How to prepare for your exam:

For your safety and comfort you will need to complete a few steps prior to your visit.

STEP 1: Pre-exam screening takes place to ensure you are able to complete the exam safely. You will be asked to outline your personal medical history including:

  • Any surgeries you may have had recently or historically in the area being scanned
  • Any implants, such as cardiac pacemakers, neurostimulators, or cochlear implants
  • Any metal in the body such as rods, screws, shrapnel, etc.
  • Any piercings or tattoos

STEP 2: The day before and day of your exam you may need to make additional preparations:

  • MRI Abdomen: Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the procedure
  • MRCP: Nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours before the procedure

Bring all documentation regarding stents, devices, and implants to appointment

What to expect during the exam:

Once you are registered and checked-in, a technologist will call you back to the exam room. They will ask or review the screening questions with you to ensure all is correct and you are cleared for the exam. Once cleared, you will be asked to change into a gown or scrubs. A locker will be provided to store clothing and personal items during the exam.

The technologists will help you onto the exam table, and ensure you are comfortable. Your technologist will offer comforts such as music, ear protection, eye covering, pillows, etc. They will explain how the exam will proceed and the length of time each sequence will take.

Remember, throughout the exam you will be in contact with the technologists and they will update you along the way.
